After a day at the beach

A summer vacation doesn’t feel complete without a dip in the sea. Coming towards the end of our Italy vacation we had almost two days left to enjoy the Ligurian Riviera. These pictures were taken after a day spent at the beach near Sori.

Wet hair pulled in a high ponytail, freckles and a white top… a winning combination for a summer evening, don’t you think so? The next post will take us to Portofino and mark the official end of the Italy series…

Mediterranean beauty secrets

A lot of my fascinations and habits are rooted in my childhood. This random photograph taken in Tuscany about a month ago instantly evoked memories in me that I'd like to share with you.

It all began the first time I went with my parents to their olive grove on the Aegean cost in Turkey. I remember wandering between the trees under a sweltering sun, listening only with half an ear to the grown-ups talk about the properties and the upcoming harvest. Those trees were beautiful to me, maybe because they marked the landscape I so longed for when I was younger. When my parents were calling me to get in the car that day, I quickly picked a twig and pressed it later between the pages of my journal. I bet I would find that twig if I looked for my journals from those years...

In Turkish cuisine extra virgin olive oil is widely used and rather heavy-handed, something I'm also guilty of I must admit. But from the golden liquid to the green and black olives - besides to the culinary pleasures they provide I also discovered early on the beauty benefits of olive oil. My late grandmother, with whom I was very close, would only use natural olive oil soap bars, even for washing her hair, telling me this was the reason why she never had grey hair even well after 70. Even though I doubted the magic she attributed to her beauty routines, I would take the soap bars and use them back home in Switzerland. Sometimes they had tiny crushed olive stones in them, being a cleanser and a body peeling in one.

I love experimenting with natural products, often mixing my own peelings with sugar or salt, ground bean coffee, olive oil, sometimes with a little dollop of honey to get the right consistency. I just take pleasure in mixing these ingredients, knowing they are pure and basically safe enough to eat. So just like I did with coconut oil a while back, I looked for a couple more ways you could use extra virgin olive oil for pampering yourself and beaming yourself to the Mediterranean.

  • Universal moisturizer: A lot of people use extra virgin olive oil sparingly as a facial moisturizer. Especially in winter when my skin gets drier I will try this out. Also olive oil can be used as a body oil.
  • Cuticle moisturizer: Just rub a tiny amout into your nailbeds and go to bed knowing you properly took care of your nails.
  • Eye makeup remover: I guess this should be really effective with waterproof makeup.
  • Lip exfoliator: Mix a little bit of brown sugar with olive oil and honey.

Posting photographs from my short Italy vacation has the advantage that it now feels like I was actually there for longer than just 10 days. So I'm prolonging that feeling with these impressions from Montepulciano, yet another medieval and renaissance hill town in Tuscany.

We just made a very short trip to see the town and obviously for tastings of the world-famous vino nobile. I'm very inspired in these kinds of places and try to take in as much as possible, also through a lens to keep these memories forever.

On that day I wore a maxi dress I had bought last year, which I quite like because of the thin straps and the overlay detail on the front and back.

Dress: Manoukian

There are still a couple of posts left from Italy before you'll see fall clothing here on the blog but I hope you don't mind. Because I am not yet ready to switch from bright sunny days to gloomy weather and heavy layers that will soon become necessary...

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Five years ago today

Five years ago today there was the first post ever on Styleseeking Zurich. Probably not more than five people saw it on that day but it didn't matter to us - we had found a new hobby!

There wasn't much to see or read anyway, but see for yourself: MiJi's first post, then Nesli's and finally a couple of days later one from both of us together, marking our beginning. Five years, of which at least three were spent at the university where we studied together (1,2, 3), made future plans, and lots of outfit pictures on the school's premises (1, 2. 3.)

Shitty attitudes, moody nights, disappointments, home comings, fond memories, love notes, side blows, proud moments,... they're still all uncensored in the archives, all of the 936 posts. It felt good - and still does - to come back here from time to time, to publish something, and to be in touch with our readers and friends both on- and offline.

At this point, we would like to thank all our readers, collaboration partners, the ones who invited us to exciting events, the ones giving inputs and the ones who approach us in real life telling us they like what they read and see on our blog. Through all these interactions we had the opportunity to get in touch with many inspiring people and we even made new friends. These happenings made and still make blogging so much more interesting and valuable.

Each of us has reached different points in our lives now, but this blog always manages to makes us feel like freshmen at the university, where this journey began.

This was never a groundbreaking lifestyle blog, never something we tried to turn into more than what it was but simply this: our playground.
Happy anniversary Styleseeking Zurich!

Come away with me to Siena

One of the advantages of spending a holiday in Tuscany is that you’re never too far from beautiful historic cities such as Siena. We visited before when we were there two years ago but gladly went again for a day trip. Still adjusting to the heat in Italy I wore something very simple for the day – denim shorts – but paired with this little vintage clutch all in all I felt a bit dressier.

Top, shorts, ring: H&M
Clutch: vintage

My next travel post will take us to Montepulciano.... Until then, ciao ragazzi!
